I believe that you can start fresh whenever you want. All it takes is your willingness to choose change, growth and your happiness. If you’ve fallen off the wagon then I hope this will serve you in re-establishing your own 2019 personal growth goals! And if you’ve been ignoring all the ‘New Year, new me’ type of content so far and don’t really resonate with vague resolutions, this post could serve you as inspiration.
Let’s build simple, soul-centered goals for our personal growth and overall wellness for this year. Let’s focus on what’s in our hearts, be authentic, and pursue happier, brighter, and empowering experiences in our lives.
Here are my top 3 personal growth goals that I’m focusing on in 2019.
1 / Celebrating my body
I recently wrote an entire post about this topic. As humans — susceptible to other people’s and society’s expectations, opinions, and illusions — we have spent most of our lives harboring blame and animosity towards our bodies.
As a dedicated yogi, last year was a lesson in humility, allowing, and releasing my urge to control. I injured myself early in the year and was unable (and afraid) to get back on the mat for most of the year.
We all deal with fear, frustration and anger towards our bodies. We torture them. We forbid ourselves. We deny our desires, our pleasure, our need for rest. We are unkind and unloving towards these beautiful vessels that allow us to explore and live this human experience.
We take our bodies for granted.
This year I’m dedicating time to truly celebrate and honor my body and what it’s capable of doing.
How it carries me through life’s ups and downs. How it constantly has my back and supports me without asking anything in return. Well, almost anything. A little nurture and love is all it takes.
I am choosing to see my body through the eyes of gratitude and love.
Even when I feel frustrated about my lack of progress on the yoga mat. Even when I feel self-conscious about the shape of my body.
And especially when I feel like denying my body what it truly needs.
2 / Exploring connection and authentic presence
I’m a very introverted, independent person. I feel fulfilled with the couple of close friends I have in my life and get immense joy from connecting with my community online.
That being said, this year I’m switching things up. I’m making a conscious effort to get out of my comfort zone, embrace being more visible, and connect more with people both on and off line.
I want to build inspiring, supportive new friendships with women who align with my values and share my goals and visions.
I want to connect deeper with my spirituality, and my personal spiritual practice remains one of my most valued priorities in 2019.
And, as I mentioned already, I want to connect to my body and focus on celebrating and honoring it on a deeper level.
I’m also practicing being more present in my life. I want to focus on what lights me up without any distractions. And when I’m in the presence of others, I want to be fully there.
As an example, I’ve established ‘no phone’ times for myself during the day, and all screens go dark at around 8 PM. Being away from devices gives me space for the things I’ve long wanted to do more of but have neglected before. Reading, journaling, meditating…. knitting while listening to an audiobook.
Screens are seductive little thieves of time, and I’m not okay with letting them get away with it anymore. I deserve better and therefore I am changing my habits and exploring a new way.
Are you in?
3 / Choosing courage over fear
Choosing courage over fear and overwhelm over and over and over again is a daily, dedicated, devotional practice. This is not something you’re going to be comfortable with when you first begin. It’s a practice.
We give into fear every day of our lives. Our fear shows up abundantly and variedly and all of us know it’s there, always present, somewhere in the background.
We don’t speak our truth. Sometimes we portray ourselves to the world in inauthentic ways. We hide, hold back and play small.
We deny ourselves what we desire, we stay in situations that don’t serve us, we hold onto people who are not deserving of our greatness.
We stay addicted to our bad habits and patterns.
We don’t say the words, do the things, or have the courage to chase the life we know we’re meant to live.
Every moment that we choose fear instead of courage, we betray ourselves.
We say no to the person we really are. We deny the inner guidance that would lead us to be our highest selves —the version of us who longs for us to finally say no to fear and rise up and shine brighter than the goddamn sun.
You are the sun.
Yes, that is a Grey’s Anatomy reference.
Because you are the sun. You are worthy of so much greatness and it’s available to you as soon as you decide. Be willing. Show up.
So join me!
